Natural Cold Remedy

I swear by this whenever I have a cold. I don't do over-the-counter cold / flu medications.I believe mother nature gives us almost all we need to cure general ailments. I'm going to do some more detailed posts on the health benefits of these ingredients. You will need fresh ginger, garlic, chilli, honey, lemon and boiling water. I slice my ginger root and chillis and freeze them in small quantities, so they don't go off in between needing them, hence the icy look above!

Cut them almost through, to release the oils, but so you don't have lots of little pieces floating in your cup. Alternatively you could blend them and steep them in a teapot, pouring through a strainer.

Pour in boiling water, add honey and lemon. Leave for a few minutes and drink. You can feel it working instantly, cleaning your throat of germs, working on your sinuses, and soothing your whole being! I wish I'd remembered this on Friday when I was suffering aches and pains and fever, I'd have had it with a little whiskey. This in a hot bath, then bed, will cure the worst bout. I top up the mug with boiling water and honey again, and it's just as potent the second time, maybe even three goes out of it!

  1. Inhaling the steam of a warm soup can aid clearing up your nose. Also, the warm liquid that is soup can loosen up the mucus.

  2. Hi Niamh, I saw in another post you mentioned Charlie gets a cough with every cold. I'm the same (a 24 hour snuffle always ends up with two weeks of a hacking cough) so wanted to pass on a great tip I learnt from a parenting forum a couple of years ago - at the first sign of a cold/cough, cut an onion in half crossways (between the two ends) and have it next to your bed during sleep times. Change it for a new onion every night. I haven't a clue how or why it works, but it really does help.
    Will definitely try your remedy next time too!
