Apologies for the heap o' shit grainy photo, it was late at night.
O M G I am so excited about this bloody contraption, a 3.5l slow cooker, with removable pot so it can go straight to the table and threaten your kid's fingertips with its heat.
This is the first meal I prepared in it, a mishmash of leftover veg before I go shopping tomorrow. In it there are:
2 small onions
1 dubious leek
Approx 2tbsp butter (in which I sautéed the onion and carrot first)
Lentils, about a mugful of brown ones I'd soaked, boiled and frozen (feckin time-consuming pulses...)
Some passata, water and a pint of purple liquid which I strained off the boiled beetroot yesterday and didn't want to throw out. I'm sure it has loads of nutritional value, I meant to Google it.
Cumin, cinnamon, turmeric, thyme, salt and pepper and some ground chilli, oh and mixed herbs.
Now how to package it to the family... purple leek and lentil stew? Broth? Soup? It's all in the name. It may have to be Santa Stew, or something equally appealing as the kids both turned their noses up at the sight of it. Maybe I'll puree it and call it Winter soup.
I'm cooking every meal from scratch these days, at least every three days or so I do an inordinate amount of peeling, chopping, blah blah. I really needed to cut down on the time spent at the stove, though I do enjoy it. Hence the slow cooker purchase. And I'm assured they are worth their weight in gold. I will let you know how I get on.
In other news I'm finished my Christmas shopping, did the last dodgy deal this morning: windswept pub carpark, cash transaction, hoping the damn thing works.
And my toddler woke one hour after I went to sleep, and stayed awake for the next 5 hours, 3 of which were on my watch. As I tried dozing off he'd wake me for another boob or to select a different episode of whatever inane animation he was watching on my phone. Growing pains. Feeling slightly out of it this morning, and not helped by my technicolour surroundings in this play area.
Not going to complain any more. I am so blessed.
How are you gearing up for Christmas?
