Since my sweet stash disappeared and hasn't been replaced (except for that bag of strawberry bonbons) my nighttime treat/supper has become a smoothie.
I'm not talking about the mulch I would make for breakfast, hiding spinach or kale in it for health. I'm talking the dessert-in-a-glass type. This satisfies my craving for something sweet, while filling me up before bed, as I can't sleep on even a half-empty stomach.
Tonight I made one with:
1 cupful of frozen cherries
2 tsp honey
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1 tbsp linseeds (cuz my joints need the omegas today)
Almond milk (unsweetened) to cover
It was so yum, like a cherry pie!
The basics for my sweet smoothies are always banana firstly, with a creamy liquid, usually almond milk, or yogurt and water if I've no milk, or oats and water if I've no yogurt! Then I'll add some honey, vanilla essence, spices, cacao powder, oats, ground seeds, frozen berries, whatever I have in the house. I will sometimes grind a blend of seeds, sesame, linseed, sunflower, and add a tablespoon, or add peanut butter. Think of what you'd like to taste in a cake and add that, and you won't go wrong. Banana and chocolate, chocolate and peanut, honey and nuts, blueberry and coconut, apple and cinnamon (stewed apple or rhubarb is gorgeous in a smoothie). Or try maple syrup or date syrup to sweeten, or coconut milk, or freezing the bananas first. Or add a scoop of icecream. There are no rules, guys!
My kids love a "yellow smoothie" ("lello moothie") with just bananas, almond milk, honey and turmeric. Healthy and delicious, I've also frozen this as icepops for them.
I'm going to add some links here to lovely online sites which have inspired my smoothies in the past, you should totally check out their other offerings.
