This is something I'm immensely proud of: my first chutney. I'm not a chutney lover or eater normally, but it's been on my radar recently with all the jams and preserving I've been researching. I had a couple of over-ripe pears and a large windfall apple from our tree which I was planning to turn into a chutney, but then I remembered a bag of elderberry pulp in the freezer left over from the syrup making last month. I added them all to a saucepan with some honey, turmeric, nutmeg, fresh rosemary and salt, and the rest is history. I've some in the fridge and more in the freezer. Today I had it for lunch on oatcakes with cheese and cold roasted courgette slices. Heaven, truly.
It has a fruity, smoky taste, and the crunch of the elderberry seeds is a lovely partner to the cool crunch of the apple. The pears melted away into the sauce part of it, giving the whole thing a gorgeous sweetness, and the turmeric adds a bit of interest to the colour, as well as great health benefits.
Have you made any jams or preserves this season?
